Sarah Elizabeth Bennett Columbus, Ohio — The community mourns the passing of Sarah Elizabeth Bennett, a devoted mother, compassionate educator, inspiring advocate, and beloved wife, who passed away after a courageous battle with ALS. Diagnosed in March 2023, Sarah faced her illness with remarkable strength, honesty, and grace, leaving a legacy of love, resilience, and selflessness.
Sarah was 37 years old and lived in Columbus with her husband, Rusty, their two sons, aged 5 and 7, and their loyal dog, Grif. Family was at the core of her world, and Sarah’s love for her children and husband was evident in every moment of her life. Her home was a place of warmth, joy, and unwavering devotion.
Before her diagnosis, Sarah dedicated 15 years as a full-time high school Social Studies teacher, where she touched the lives of countless students. She served not only in the classroom but also as a club advisor and swim coach, encouraging her students to grow intellectually, emotionally, and socially. Her involvement on the board of a suicide prevention nonprofit demonstrated her deep commitment to supporting others beyond the school walls.
Sarah also ran her own small business, helping people get organized, applying the same care and thoughtful attention to her clients that she brought to every relationship. She loved yoga, dancing in her kitchen, and—above all—being an advocate for others, whether through teaching, mentoring, or simply listening.
When Sarah began experiencing symptoms, she sought answers with determination. Her ALS diagnosis, though devastating, gave her and her family clarity and the opportunity to plan with intention for the future. In her own reflections shared during her illness, Sarah expressed profound insight and heartfelt gratitude for the life she lived, even amid hardship:
“I am not in pain, or tired. I can laugh, talk, and I can move. Reflecting on the last few months of my life, I am glad I didn’t go suddenly even WITH the suffering. I finished my list. Even if you don’t believe in anything, I am feeding the earth, and my tree. I loved this life, and am grateful for the time.”
Sarah’s openness about her experience allowed others to see her courage, her vulnerability, and her gratitude. Even as her illness progressed and forced her to retire from teaching, the one thing that never changed was the love and support she shared with her family and friends.
Sarah Elizabeth Bennett is survived by her husband, Rusty, her two sons, her extended family, and a community of friends, students, and colleagues who admired her intellect, compassion, and joyful spirit. She will be remembered for her unwavering devotion to family, her generosity of heart, and the profound impact she had on all who knew her.
In this time of sorrow, the family asks for privacy as they grieve and honor Sarah’s memory. A celebration of her life will be shared with those whose lives she enriched, and her legacy will continue through her children and the countless lives she touched.
Sarah Bennett’s life was one of love, purpose, strength, and gratitude—a life that will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever cherished.
